C.H. Spurgeon

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Verse: “Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.” – Psalm 101:6

Quote: “Let no true-hearted man think that he is over-looked; the king himself has his eye upon him.”

I decided today to implement a different devotional.  I have been reading C.H. Spurgeons “Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith” on and off all year, and have found good encouragement in his writings, I just haven’t been consistent.  This morning’s had several good quotes, but this one stuck out to me.  Sometimes even the faithful need to be reminded that when no one else is keeping track, God Himself is.

The Will to Loyalty

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Verse: “Choose this day whom ye will serve.” – Joshua 24:15

Quote: “You have no business to find out where God is leading, the only thing God will explain to you is Himself.”

If you choose to serve God, you have to be willing to follow where He leads with no explanation.  If you always knew exactly where He was taking you it would be easy to follow, but He wants you to trust Him knowing that He has your best interest in mind.  Keep your sight on God, not a destination, and allow Him to reveal Himself to you in whatever situation you are in.

All Noble Things are Difficult

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Verse: “Enter ye in at the strait gate…because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way…” – Matthew 7:13-14

Quote: “If we are going to live as disciples of Jesus, we have to remember that all noble things are difficult…It is always necessary to make an effort to be noble.”

Those are the first and last sentences of today’s devotion.  In effect, Chambers is saying “It’s not going to be easy, but you still have to try.”  We often know what is the right thing to do, we just have difficulty rousing up to do it, but the emphasis here is pivotal–make an effort; you have to work at it.

Vision and Reality

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Verse: “And the parched ground shall become a pool.” – Isaiah 35:7

Quote: “If you have ever had the vision of God, you may try as you like to be satisfied on a lower level, but God will never let you.”

The parched ground is who we are as fallen creatures, the pool is our potential–who God wants us to be.  Not only does God have a vision for us, He also has the means to help us accomplish that vision and fulfill our role in His kingdom.  We have to take that vision and make it a reality by choosing to obey God’s leading.  Vision without actuality is a breeding ground for Satan’s attack.  Live out what God puts in.  Accomplish the visions He’s given you.

Don’t Calculate Without God

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Verse: “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.” – Psalm 37:5

Quote: “The one thing that keeps us from the possibility of worrying is bringing God in as the greatest factor in all our calculations.”

Chambers frequently stays on a specific topic for multiple days in a row, and it almost always coincides with where God is working in my life at the time.  I am now learning that worrying can be a past tense verb too, in the form of regret.  If we commit an area of our life over to God, we should trust that He has taken all variables into account, past, present, and future.  We are here to do God’s work, so trust that as long as He leaves you here, He has work for you and provisions for that work.

One of God’s Great Don’ts

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Verse: “Fret not thyself, it tendeth only to evil doing.” – Psalm 37:8 (RV)

Quote: “Resting in the Lord does not depend on external circumstances at all, but on your relationship to God Himself.”

Worrying is one of those sins that a lot of Christians take for granted; some even think of worrying as a sign of maturity or wisdom.  However it is much more wicked than that, as it shuns the perfect peace that God freely offers us.  When we worry, we are effectively telling God there is nothing He can do about our situation–we are in control, and the outcome depends entirely on our own natural ability.  Constantly give your life, your environment, your thoughts over to God, and watch as He leads you to a place of rest time and time again.

The Concentration of Personal Sin

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Verse: “Woe is Me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips.” – Isaiah 6:5

Quote: “When I get into the presence of God, I do not realize that I am a sinner in an indefinite sense; I realize the concentration of sin in a particular feature of my life.”

It is easy for us to confess that we are “sinners”; it is often used as a sign of humility among believers.  But when we are communicating with God, He won’t settle for such a generic label.  His Spirit presses until you confess that particular area of your life His light has revealed.  Then, as you give that part of you completely over to God, He will lay open to you a different area.  Be honest with yourself before God, and watch how He works in your life.

The Conditions of Discipleship

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Verse: “If any man come to Me, and hate not…he cannot be My disciple.” – Luke 14:26

Quote: “Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to a Person, our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Chamber’s goes on to say that too many times we get devoted to the cause of Christ, instead of the person of Christ.  Your obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ should transcend all other relationships and ideals until He is your single focus.  Everything else will fall into place.

The Inevitable Penalty

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Verse: “I assure you that you won’t be free again until you have paid the last penny.” – Matthew 5:26 (NLT)

Quote: “The moment you realize God’s purpose, which is to get you rightly related to Himself and then to your fellow men, He will tax the last limit of the universe to help you take the right road.”

When I read that quote, I picture God in heaven looking down to earth.  His eyes squinted, canvasing the scene of my life with anticipation, awaiting my signal at any moment.  His hand is stretched out behind Him keeping the anxious, battle-ready angels in line, though He never takes His eyes off me.  The white horses are uneasy, sensing the inevitable mission.  They shake their heads and stamp the ground as a gust of smoke shoots out of their nostrils.  Even the fury of the earth awakens as dark clouds billow in underneath while lightning forms inside them.  Then, His eyes widen as I fall to my knees and cry out for Him, and before I can fully pronounce His name, He thrusts His arm forward and roars “Now!”, as His limitless army rushes to my side.

The idea that God will use everything within His power to help me live the life He set out for me is nothing new, but sometimes something can remind me in a way that brings a freshness to the thought of it.  Today that was Oswald Chambers.

The above verse attached to today’s devotion is from Jesus’ sermon on the mount.  The context is being thrown in debtor’s prison for not settling accounts with someone.  Once you are there, you cannot get out until every last bit of debt has been paid.  Chambers likens this to the inevitable consequences, or penalty, for avoiding the urgings of the Holy Spirit.  His scrutiny will remain on you until you realize your need for God and cry out for His help.  Then, well, you get the idea.

Let’s get this party started

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I’ve been meaning to get consistent with blogging, but just never found the motivation.  This morning I had an idea for a consistent blog (we’ll see how long this lasts).  Everyday (mostly) I read Oswald Chambers’ “My Utmost for is Highest.”  I have so for the past few years, and especially this year, I try to find a quote in each day’s writing to highlight and put in my journal.  My goal for this blog category is to post those quotes, and hopefully expound on them a little.  So here’s todays:

Title: Do It Now

Verse: “Agree with thine adversary quickly.” – Matthew 5:25

Quote: “From our Lord’s standpoint it does not matter whether I am defrauded or not; what does matter is that I do not defraud.”

One of my favorite thing about reading Chambers, is that he is always quick to point out that in order to live the life Christ has designed for us, we must be willing to deny our rights to ourselves.  You will here me use that saying a lot, because I feel that it is crucial to the Christian life.  The above quote exemplifies that ideal: It is more important to protect Christ’s image than our own.
