The Way to Know

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Verse: “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine…
– John 7:17

Quote: “The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect, but obedience.”

If ever there is a time when you feel spiritually disconnected, or in the darkness, you can be sure there is something God has spoken which you do not intend to obey. Intellectually, we feel disconnected because of ignorance, but spiritually it is almost certainly a lack of obedience.  You may not have gone left when God said to go right, maybe you stayed still when God said “Go.” Obedience is heeding God’s direction immediately. You may hesitate before you obey, like the parable of the two sons in Matthew 21:28-32, but you will remain in the darkness until you do.

Mastery Over the Believer

Verse: “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.” – John 13:13

Quote: “The revelation of my growth in grace is the way in which I look upon obedience.”

Jesus leaves us free from the obligation of obedience, and give us the ability to choose. “So free that we can spit in His face, as men did; so free that we can put Him to death, as men did; and He will never say a word.” We must learn that obedience is not our duty to Christ, for He never insists upon it, but it is a result of our relationship as sons of the Father.

The Conditions of Discipleship

Verse: “If any man come to Me, and hate not…he cannot be My disciple.” – Luke 14:26

Quote: “Discipleship means personal, passionate devotion to a Person, our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Chamber’s goes on to say that too many times we get devoted to the cause of Christ, instead of the person of Christ.  Your obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ should transcend all other relationships and ideals until He is your single focus.  Everything else will fall into place.
